Archaeology & History

Carrowkeel - 14 passage tombs on a mountain top, built around 3200-2400 B.C. Castlebaldwin, Co Sligo. "for me the spot that most invokes the essence of Ireland is Carrowkeel passage tombs, west into the hills from Castlebaldwin, in Co Sligo" - The Irish Times

Carrowmore megalithic cemetery - the largest cemetery of megalithic tombs in Ireland. Knocknarea, Co. Sligo.

Creevykeel - atmospheric and very accessible court tomb only metres from the main Bundoran to Sligo road.

Inishmurray island - an abandoned island off the coast of sligo with the remains of a 6th century monastery (images, tours)

Parke's Castle - A restored 17th century plantation castle on the shores of Lough Gill

Sligo Abbey - 13th century, contains Gothic and Renaissance tomb sculpture, well preserved cloister and the only sculptured 15th century high altar to survive in any Irish monastic church.

The Yeats family & Sligo

WB Yeats's mother's family, the Pollexfens, were Sligo business people and are buried in Saint John's Cathedral in Sligo town. Their business was based in what is now known as 'The Western Wholesale' building in Sligo.

WB Yeats stayed at and was inspired by Lissadell House, and is buried in Drumcliffe churchyard. Both are 10-15 minutes drive from the cottage.

Paintings by Jack B Yeats are on display in the Model::Niland Collection. Jack used locations throughout Sligo for his paintings, particularly Rosses Point represented in Memory Harbour.

The Yeats Society in Sligo runs the annual Yeats International Summer School as well as the Yeats Winter School.
